The real life nurse and doctor duo known as Emily and Robert came in to our studio and expressed that they wanted something “a little different” for their engagement photo session. Ask and ye shall receive as I like to say.

As we began planning the engagement session we ended up with the idea of taking their current professions and exaggerating them a bit. As the idea formulated, I thought back to advertisements circa 1930 where doctors were featured promoting cigarettes. I envisioned that this might be the “good ole days” kind of doctors visit where one could enjoy a smoke and a martini while waiting for their check-up.Emily went all out in finding a nurses uniform and of course a classic hat while Robert was in charge of bringing the decanter and martini glass. While driving to meet the couple, my assistant and I came up with the idea of adding some candy into the session to go along with the pinup feel. After all what’s a doctors visit without a lollipop!?

And finally we made a last minute call to the father of the bride who had no idea what he was walking into. Within 5 minutes of his arrival I asked him to strip down to his boxers and to slap on a patient gown. He was an amazing sport and really put the whip cream and cherry on to the session.

The one thing that I always tell my clients, friends and family is to take a portrait session that they’re planning and make it your own. The thing is that your portrait or engagement session are going to start as being wall or album art for your home and eventually migrate to being memories. So the question that I always ask is, “what do you want to look back at as your memories?”
