Chicago Senior Portrait – Emily

If you can’t beat the cold you might as well join it. That became our motto on a brisk Chicago day as the flurries began to fall from the sky. Initially Emily and I began her senior portrait session in studio. After we had a few images ranging from the warm and smiling to the more gritty and dramatic I asked Emily what her tolerance level was to the cold weather. Her response was an enthusiastic “No problem, let’s do it!”

So we started off in our studio courtyard and then ventured off a bit further to an industrial parking lot to get a bit of backdrop from some fencing in the area. The gloominess of the day gave us the opportunity to play around with our studio lights and to have Emily really pop out of the scene against the dark green background. Some folks have asked about the flower that appears in one of the images. Is it added in after or in the original shot? The flower is courtesy of my studio neighboring florist who was nice enough to give us this rose to use for her image. It can be a bit tricky the get the flower to appear correctly in the image since it has to be perfectly centered and straight on to the camera. This added a fun new element to the session itself.

If you have a high school aged child who is looking to capture their portrait. The best advice is to make the shoot your own. Bring your personality, style and flavor to the shoot and you’ll be surprised at the unique images that come out of it!
