Chicago Cultural Center

Architects at the turn of the 20th century intended for the building to be modest but welcoming on the exterior.

Surprises awaited once people walked through the front door, however. There was sumptuous marble everywhere and vivid mosaics inspired by Venetian landmarks. But even these dramatic touches paled next to the breathtaking stained-glass domes, which bathe the limestone building in opalescent color even on cloudy days.

Could this striking dichotomy be a metaphor for life in general and marriage in particular?

Jane and Ryan think so, which is why they chose the Chicago Cultural Center as for their Chicago engagement session.

Demure yet flirty, elegant yet spirited and sassy yet romantic, the iconic center right across the street from Millennium Park evokes the spirit of today’s most optimistic couples. And the stunning staircase? Think of it as a metaphor, too – for the winding journey that lies ahead.

Salvage One

The exposed brick walls and wood beams exude a casual air. But then, the stained glass windows and crystal chandeliers create a feeling of grandeur amid the antique furniture.

Is this venue for chic urban couples or traditionalists at heart? The answer: Yes.

Salvage One is one of Chicago’s most sought-after wedding venues because it easily adapts to a couple’s whims and preferences. As a retail store housing some of the city’s most eclectic architectural treasures, it can accommodate virtually any stylistic preference. Just ask Jane and Ryan, who “tried on” several styles for their engagement photos.

While the sun-drenched interior of Salvage One presents plenty of options for almost any portrait session, so does the outdoor courtyard – a calming, ethereal place where couples can exchange wedding vows. Afterward, Salvage One’s vintage bar beckons guests to mingle over…what? A craft beer or a martini? At Salvage One, the accommodating answer is always “yes.”  This venue ranks as one of my personal favorites where I recently did a shoot in a somewhat different style.

Gilt Bar

What engagement session would be complete without a stop at Gilt Bar?  To quote the establishment, it’s an inviting River North bar and restaurant featuring classic craft cocktails and contemporary American cuisine.  The downstairs library offers an intimate and private space to capture some truly sultry shots.  If you get a chance to stop by, check out their Old Fashioned cocktail.
