On September 11th, 2001 I was a college student at DePaul and living in a college apartment with a fantastic view of the city. Sometimes late at night I would just sit around and watch the skyline from the window since our building was one of the tallest in the area. The morning of 9/11, I received a frantic call from my mom telling me to get out of the city as we were under attack. Shortly after that, other students began knocking on my door and coming in with their cameras since our apartment had a view of the city. They were going to record any events that might occur in Chicago. Fortunately there were no incidents in Chicago.
10 years later, as I drove on September 11th, 2011 to meet a client for an early morning photo session, the client notified me that they were well behind in their schedule and would be late by at least 30 minutes to our photo session. I had just passed by the Northbrook Fire Department and decided to turn around and as permission to capture some images there. The following images are from their memorial service. Towards the end they invited community members to come up and share any personal experiences that they had with 9/11.
