Chicago Riverfront Wedding // Czarina + Maksym

Czarina and Maksym are one of those couples that still acts sometimes a bit reserved around one another even though they’ve been together for some time. Maksym will tell you that when he proposed to Czarina (with her family present) that he was mostly cool calm and collected. Czarina in turn will smile when she hears this and have her own point of view on the story.

Rosemont Wedding // Bari + Scott

There’s nothing like having a wedding during winter break if you’re a teacher which both Bari and Scott are! In fact that’s how they met. Scott told me that he knew from the first moment he saw Bari that she was the one. Bari on the other hand took a bit more time than Scott but ultimately they ended up together!

Wyndham Grand Chicago Wedding // Sarah + Tanya

Time flies when you’re having fun.  Their engagement session flew by and the same went for the wedding of Sarah and Tanya!  This time we left the drum set at home and instead grabbed our bouquets and hit the streets of Chicago!  Our day began and ended at the Wyndham Grand Chicago.  Normally when I got up to the bridal suite, I get photos of the details.  And one of the first details I noticed was a humorous little set of cards with some sound marital advice.  (See the first image below)

Victoria In The Park Wedding // Monika and Jakub

This was possibly our most ambitious wedding in terms of travel.  Monika and Jakub were getting married near the loop in Chicago, but wanted to get their portraits done at St. Mary’s of the Lake in Mundelein.  It would have been doable with the amount of time we had allocated and the party trolley was in full swing.  But a massive set of thunderstorms that came through after their ceremony, quite literally rained on our parade.  Having just done a commercial shoot at The Drake Hotel in Chicago, I grabbed the phone and called a few people that I had met during my shoot.  They were kind enough to allow us in for a few portraits out of the rain.  And after a brief shoot indoors, we met back up with the bridal party waiting outside.

Elgin Wedding at Hickory Stick // Cary + Julio

Hickory Stick is a popular venue in the Elgin area for weddings which is a great spot to consider for your wedding. Before heading to the reception, we had a portrait session at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve that is best described as cozy, quaint and isolated enough that you don’t need to worry about running into too many other people! Since we were at the tail end of spring for their wedding, my only concern was the chance of rain. But as the day got closer, the conditions looked to be perfectly sunny and polar vortex free! Elgin can be an easy area to overlook when it comes to photos. But one point that I would make is that there is a lot of scenic greenery out there. It’s a great location to get country-esque images without having to go hours outside of Chicago.

Lauren and Ilya – Winter Wonderland

What do you do if you’re planning on having your wedding in the middle of a Chicago winter? You pack it with some fun family and friends and dance the night away! Chicago Wedding Photography – Betty + Theo

Last year we had the wedding of Joanne and John.  Shortly after that, John’s sister Betty was engaged and we were planning out her and Theo’s engagement and wedding shoot.  Their engagement session was downtown near Millennium Park.  Both Betty and Theo wanted to feature Chicago in their photographs and since we knew that we wouldn’t make it down to the city on the day of their wedding, we planned out their engagement session there.

On the day of their wedding Betty and Theo got ready in classic family style at home.  From there it was off to the church for their first look as Betty emerged from the doors and down the center aisle.  The first thing you’ll noticed about most Greek churches is how ornately they are decorated and I made sure to incorporate the environment.  Father Dean conducted the wedding and he had also conducted the wedding for John on Joanne so my photographers and I were prepared for his rules on being very out of the way and not chewing gum .

After the ceremony we were off to the reception with a brief stop for some individual portraits in a park nearby.  The location was a wide open area with very little shade.  You may wonder why that would be a factor, but the sun beaming in your eyes and sometimes harsh light can be factors.  In this instance we found some amazing tall grass to photograph in front of.  From there we made our way just a few minutes down the road to the hall itself where the dances began and the dollars flew through the air all night!

Galena Wedding Photography – Danielle and Adam

Galena is not the first place that comes to my mind when it comes to weddings. The reason for this is because if anything, I’m usually heading out there to go skiing, wine tasting or simply seeking it out as a destination for a motorcycle ride. But it’s quite the hidden gem that’s not too far from Chicago. Oak Hill was the venue which Danielle and Adam selected to have their Galena wedding. It offers an on-site chapel, home to get ready, a tented pavilion for the reception and many other little treasures around the property.

The first impression that you get when you arrive is “relaxed country”. When you’re in Chicago, there are very few venues with such a wide open and spacious feel. Heading an hour or two west will solve all of your space needs. With wide open fields, plenty of trails and a massive property that’s reserved for your wedding only, it’s an easy choice of places to host your wedding for those wanting something different. Oak Hill is a great location and offers up a genuine vintage feel, without having to travel too far outside of Chicago. It gets a photographic stamp of approval!

Chicago Wedding Photography-Katya and Frank

We’ve heard of high school sweethearts, but in this instance our couple falls into the category of ‘college sweethearts’. Previously we featured their engagement session at Northwestern and we moved a bit further south for their wedding images to the downtown Chicago area. Interestingly enough they now both reside in Minnesota, but came back to Chicago for their wedding to change their title to “Chicago Wedding Sweethearts”.

We kicked off at the Hyatt Hotel on Wacker in Chicago where they both got ready and had their first look. The softer side of Frank quickly emerged the moment he saw Katya and it was love at first sight all over again. We were then off for an ambitious 4 location shoot in just 3 hours before the ceremony! First on our list was Michigan Avenue near the Chicago Tribune building. A very popular spot and each time I’m here I try to get some sort of new perspective. Classic shots and compositions are great, but it’s also important to push the boundaries a bit, innovate and stay fresh.

After a lap around the city we made our way back to the Bridgeport Art Center for their ceremony and reception. One note for upcoming brides is that if you’re seeking to make more time for your portrait session on your wedding day, the easiest way to do it is to have your ceremony and reception in the same place. By not having to transfer from one location to another it can easily free up an additional hour or two on the day of your wedding. For those planning a Chicago Wedding, it’s ideal to then stay in the city for your portraits. If your wedding is in the suburbs then ideally your portraits should also be in the suburbs. Use your engagement session to head off to a location that you might not be able to make on the day of your wedding.

As the night got going there were shots, toasts, dancing, more shots, more dancing and most importantly, an ice cream truck. The Bridgeport Art Center has such a large elevator that even a truck can fit inside. This let the truck roll right on into the reception hall and serve guests a fun midnight treat!

Chicago Wedding Photography – The ‘Feel Good’ Moments

When we’re photographing a wedding or engagement in Chicago one of the things that we go over is the theme and feel of the images that each couple is looking for. Sometimes couples who are happy go lucky want to mix it up a bit and go with a bit more style and glamour while other times it’s all about keeping it lighthearted and fun! Either way the choice is yours and one that should require a little bit of thought. These images will be your memories for years and displayed as albums or photo art in your home, so the question boils down to “What would you like to see?” In fact for the engagement session is the perfect time to put a true theme or style together. Since you have more time during the engagement session it’s a great time to think out of the box. If you enjoy bike riding together, let’s grab some bikes and head to the lake front! If bowling is right up your alley then that’s a great place for us to stage a couple shots…with permission of course.

The one thing to keep in mind is that even if you’re doing a more dramatic themed or styled shoot (something our studio specializes in), it’s still important to capture a few happy shots that truly show who you are. Don’t be afraid to crack a smile or have some fun! Drama might make for some artsy images, but smiles are what make the memories of your wedding photography.
